유나이티드항공 사과문으로 영어 공부해보자

유나이티드 항공이 오버부킹 때문에 동양인 승객을 억지로 끌어내려서 피투성이를 만든 사건 때문에 전세계가 시끌시끌합니다. 사건이 발생한 이후 유나이티드 항공 측에서는 여러번에 걸쳐 사과문을 발표했는데요. 사과문을 읽어보면서 영어를 공부해봅시다.

최초에 발표한 짧은 사과문은 부적절한 표현들로 가득해서 오히려 많은 사람들의 공분을 샀습니다. 결국 유나이티드 항공의 CEO는 다시 한번 사과문을 발표했는데요. 회사의 이미지는 더욱 나빠질 곳이 없어 보였지만, 이런 일련의 사건으로 인해 더더욱 추락하고 있는 듯 합니다. 

그러면 첫번째 사과문부터 보실까요?

This is an upsetting event to all of us here at United. I apologize for having to re-accommodate these customers. Our team is moving with a sense of urgency to work with the authorities and conduct our own detailed review of what happened. We are also reaching out to this passenger to talk directly to him and further address and resolve this situation.

 : 해당 고객들을 재배치했어야 하는 상황에 대하여 사과드립니다.

 : 우리팀은 당국과 협의하고 발생한 사건에 대하여 상세한 자체 조사를 위해 긴급하게 움직이고 있습니다.

We are also reaching out to this passenger to talk directly to him and further address and resolve this situation.

내용은 어처구니 없지만 영어를 공부하는 사람으로써 몇가지 표현에 대해서 짚어보겠습니다.

upsetting

Upset은 동사로 쓰이면 "당황하게 하다, 마음을 뒤흔들다, 마음을 뒤집어놓다"라는 뜻을 가지고 있습니다. 여기에는 동사에서 ing를 붙여서 '당황하게 하는' 혹은 '마음을 뒤집어놓는'이라는 의미로 쓰였습니다.

re-accommodate

전세계를 들끓게 했던 오늘의 단어입니다. accommodate은 '편의를 도모하다, (숙박처 등을) 제공하다, 설비를 공급하다'라는 뜨인데, 여기에 re-를 붙여서 '다시' 혹은 '재'라는 뜻으로 사용되었습니다. 승객을 강제로 끌어내렸던 상황에서 이런 단어를 선택해서 썼다는 것이 많은 사람들을 화나게 했죠. 이 단어를 떠올리기 위해서 얼마나 애썼을까... 하는 짠한 느낌도.

sense of urgency

'긴급한 느낌'이라고 직역이 되지만, 무슨 일을 진행할때 이것이 긴급한 사안이라는 것을 인지하여 신속하게 움직이고 있을때 많이 쓰이는 표현입니다. 해외 기업에서 많이 사용되는 표현입니다. 

reach out to

reach out 자체가 '접근하다, 손을 뻗다, 연락을 취하다'라는 뜻으로 쓰입니다. 여기에 '누구에게' 혹은 '어디에' 접근하다라는 표현을 할때에는 전치사 to를 사용합니다. 이런 경우에 전치사처럼 보이는 out과 to가 붙어서 나와 어색해 보일 수 있지만, 정상적인 표현입니다. to가 없으면 안됨!

상황이 진정되지 않자 유나이티드 항공 CEO는 두번째 사과문을 발표했습니다. 

Dear Team,

The truly horrific event that occurred on this flight has elicited many responses from all of us: outrage, anger, disappointment. I share all of those sentiments, and one above all: my deepest apologies for what happened. Like you, I continue to be disturbed by what happened on this flight and I deeply apologize to the customer forcibly removed and to all the customers aboard. No one should ever be mistreated this way.

I want you to know that we take full responsibility and we will work to make it right.

It's never too late to do the right thing. I have committed to our customers and our employees that we are going to fix what's broken so this never happens again. This will include a thorough review of crew movement, our policies for incentivizing volunteers in these situations, how we handle oversold situations and an examination of how we partner with airport authorities and local law enforcement. We'll communicate the results of our review by April 30th.

I promise you we will do better.
